Ethos and history

Ethos

Saffron Walden hockey Club is a Club for everyone and whose strength is built on the diversity of its playing membership, its partnership with local schools -especially Joyce Frankland Academy and the quality of the coaching and facilities that it has access to. We intend to harness these strengths as it continues its development as one of the largest Hockey Clubs in East Anglia and aspires to become one of the best Clubs in the country.

Our ethos is based upon respect – respect for all members, umpire’s spectators and the opposition

SWHC has very strong representation amongst Club, Student and Youth players and has strength in depth in playing numbers with 7 Men’s, 5 Ladies 9 Summer League and 16 Junior teams. We intend to continue to develop this strength in depth across all sections of the Club, as well as broadening our appeal to supporters and family members to encourage greater participation.

SWHC wants to play a brand of hockey that is Explosive, Exciting and Fun. We see this as being technically and tactically creative, having a positive attitude and enjoying the game. We believe in achieving excellence in coaching and promoting a culture of player development and learning in support of England Hockey’s aims.

History

We’ve come a long way since the Club was founded in 1954 with its home on Saffron Walden Common with only two teams! The Club then established its home ground at the Anglo-American Playing Fields, sharing the ground with Saffron Walden Cricket Club until 1994 when the transition to league hockey required playing on an artificial surface.

After a long search, we raised funds jointly with Newport Grammar School (now Joyce Frankland Academy) and put down an Astro turf pitch on land adjoining the school.

We were also able to build a brand-new Club House – The Wawn Pavilion – in 2004

Our facilities now include the use of two artificial pitches one specifically designed for top level hockey.
